The popularity of microfilm as an archive media is mainly down to the following factors:

All film starts life as either 16mm or 35mm film, and depending on what type of file you have it is held in either roll film or jacket/microfiche format

Roll Film

Usually preferred when dealing with closed files, the roll film can be blipped to enable easy retrieval, which can be emailed to requesting customers

Jackets/Microfiche
